Plans for Londonderry waste plant abandoned

A proposed waste treatment plant at Londonderry has been abandoned due to uncertainty surrounding the project and question marks over its potential success.

The decision by the Joint Committee of the North West Regional Waste Management Group means an end to the controversial plans to develop a £500 million gasification plant intended to process waste into energy.

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said he accepted the committee had to bow to “circumstances totally outside its control”.

“The project had the potential to make a major long-term contribution to the region’s waste management requirements,” he said.

“I am confident that in light of the major challenges which have been presented to both the deliverability and value for money of the project, the joint committee has made the correct decision.”
