SO Lance Armstrong wishes to return to the sport he loves as he considers himself a competitor.
There was nothing competitive about him when he partook of drugs to obtain a cruel, unfair and illegal advantage over his competitors.
He engaged himself in a deliberate, drug controlled habit to obtain success, over a period of seven years, revelling in the limelight of the media, making himself in the process a millionaire many times over.
This wealth was accumulated by the illegal use of drugs.
Criminals who peddled drugs and were caught are now not only serving time in prison but their ill-gotten gains have been confiscated by the state.
I view Armstrong no differently. His actions were criminal.
Instead of being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, herself a multi-millionaire as well as a high profile television interviewer, he should have been interviewed by a judge and jury in court.
Too many people have suffered by this man’s actions, particularly his cycling competitors.
A good spell behind bars would do him the world of good, as well as the sport, and it goes without saying it would be a wake-up call for others.
