A council is looking into a demonstration at which a militant Islamist flag was on display whilst one of its workers was present.
On Saturday The News Letter carried a picture of Oliver Morgan, a Dungannon and South Tyrone Council “good relations officer”, at a rally in support of the people of Gaza in Dungannon on July 26.
Among the items being held by an unidentified individual at the rally was a flag for Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Tom Elliott MLA had raised concerns about the flag, and about what such an employee was doing at the demonstration, and The News Letter had contacted the council on Friday for a response before publication.
This week it replied, via a Belfast-based PR firm.
It issued a statement which read: “Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council is seeking to confirm details of a rally which recently took place in the town and the alleged attendance of a council employee. The council will carefully consider the facts before deciding what, if any, action should be taken.
“Respect and cultural diversity are at the heart of the council’s work and we are committed to working in partnership with all communities to ensure the borough is a place where people are proud to live, work and invest.”
