County Antrim Twelfth demonstrations 2008 - parade details
SIX Orange demonstrations will take place across County Antrim on July 12.
Details for these meetings are as follows:
Ballyclare
Sixmilewater District LOL No 10 will host the Twelfth demonstration in Ballyclare for the East Antrim Orange Combine.
The Parade will start at 11am from the Foundry Lane playing fields and make its way through the town to the Sixmilewater River Park which is located on the Mill Rd.
There will be nine Orange Districts with a total of 71 lodges on parade. They will be accompanied by various bands from the East Antrim area and also visiting bands from Scotland.
In the demonstration field there will be entertainment for the children, a large variety of stalls and a concert celebrating the Faith and Witness of the Covenanters. Those taking part will include the Calvary Quartet Gospel group and the Ulster Scots folk group The Grouse Beaters
The parade will leave the field at 3.15pm for the return parade through the town.
This parade always attracts a large crowd of spectators and visitors are advised to arrive at the town early to allow time to get a good spot to watch the event.
On Friday July 4 and Saturday July 5 a "Roots Exhibition" will be held in Ballyrobert Orange Hall –Friday 7pm to 10pm, and Saturday 10am to 12 noon. The exhibition will explore the common roots, heritage and links between the Ulster, American and Scots people. It will cover the Covenanters, emigration to America, the Ulster Home Rule crisis, WWI, WWII, through to the present day. An exhibition of American and British Flags will be on display.
An American Independence Day Picnic will take place at Burnside Orange Hall (Antrim) on Saturday July 5 from 2pm to 5pm. The fun day will include music, food and games for all the family.
The 11th Night Family Bonfire celebration in the rural location of Ladyhill just outside Antrim, will include Kiddies amusements, music, Tug o War competition and the traditional bonfire lighting at 11pm. Activities start at 9pm.
Ballymena
Many people will be looking out for a new lodge on parade at the Ballymena Twelfth.
The town was the headquarters of the Royal Irish Regiment for many years before the disbanding of the home service battalion.
A new lodge – Garryowen LOL – has been formed from former members of the Royal Irish Regiment, including the Ulster Defence Regiment, and they will be on parade for the first time.
The parade assembles at the Waveney Road car park and goes through the town to the Ballee Playing Fields where the guest speaker will be Rev. Victor Ryan, Grand Chaplain of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland. Rev. Ian McLean will conduct the service and it is anticipated that approximately 20 bands will take part.
A mini-Twelfth will be held in the town on June 30 at 7.30pm and will help to raise money for a local charity.
Broughshane
Braid District No. 18 will hold their Twelfth Parade in the Co. Antrim village of Broughshane.
Twelve lodges and bands, including at least three sets of lambeg drums, will assemble at mid-day at Beechvale on the Ballymena to Broughshane Road. They will parade to Rathkeel Road where the guest speaker will be David McNarry, Assistant Grand Master.
A number of events will be held in the area leading up to the Twelfth.
On Sunday, July 6, Rev. John Pickering, formerly of Drumcree Parish Church, will conduct a service in St. Patrick's Parish Church, Broughshane.
On Monday evening, July 7, an Ulster-Scots language seminar will be held in the local community centre at 7.30pm, and on Tuesday, July 8, Dr. Tony Redmond, will give a talk on the history of Sir George White, VC.
The annual band parade will be held at 8pm on Wednesday, July 9 when a new bannerette will be unfurled.
A treasure hunt will be held in the village at 7.30pm on Thursday, July 10 and on Friday, July 11, a family fun day will be held at the youth centre during the afternoon.
Cullybackey
The Cullybackey demonstration will be a small family occasion with 17 lodges and a variety of bands taking part.
The parade assembles at 1pm at Ardna-maine and goes through the village to the football field at Cullybackey Community Centre.
The District Chaplain, Samuel McKay, will conduct the religious service.
A mini-Twelfth will be held in the village on Friday, July 4, when there will also be a re-enactment of the Battle of the Boyne by the North Irish Dragoon Society.
A musical evening will be held on Thursday, July 10, in Cullybackey High School with local musicians providing the entertainment.
Rasharkin
Forty five lodges, accompanied by 35 bands and lambeg drums, will take part in the Twelfth parade in the Co. Antrim village of Rasharkin.
The parade will assemble at Finvoy Road at 1pm and go through the village to the demonstration field at Duneaney Road.
The guest speaker will be the County Grand Master Joe Gaston.
Portglenone
The Independent Orange Order is holding its Twelfth demonstration at Portglenone, with lodges from across the Province gathering at the north Antrim venue.
