Belfast man remanded on city centre aerosol explosion


A Belfast man was remanded into custody on Thursday charged in connection with a small explosion in the city centre.

Malcolm Stevenson, 47, was arrested by police investigating the incident involving an aerosol can being ignited inside a rucksack.

No-one was injured in the explosion at the Chichester Street/Victoria Street junction early on Tuesday morning.

Stevenson, of Templemore Street in the city, appeared before Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with criminal damage endangering life.

He is alleged to have intentionally damaged a rucksack containing two aerosol canisters belonging to an unknown person. A second count of resisting police relates to his detention on Wednesday.

Stevenson had been out on bail on separate charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting police over an alleged incident a Belfast’s Corn Market on July 17. He was remanded in custody to appear again by video link next week.
