Delay fears over new chief constable appointment

Police officers’ representatives have warned against any delay in appointing a successor to the current PSNI chief constable.

Matt Baggott has announced his intention to stand down from the high-profile post in September.

His decision led to a political row over possible changes to the process used to select his replacement.

However, the existing requirement for a minimum of two years’ experience at ACC level outside of Northern Ireland remains in place.

Both the Police Federation and Superintendents’ Association have said they “fear crippling inertia” if the selection process is “hampered by political or legal wrangling”.
