Elderly couple escape injury in Banbridge arson attack

An elderly couple escaped injury in an overnight arson attack in Co Down.

Two cars and part of a house were damaged in the attack shortly before 12.40am on Saturday at Edenvale Avenue in Banbridge.

Police said a Renault car parked in the area was set on fire and extensively damaged. Damage was also caused to the front of the couple’s house and a Citroen car parked close by. The couple were not injured but left badly shaken, a spokesman added.

One of the area’s MLA’s Jo-Anne Dobson said she knows the couple who have “exemplary standing” in the town and added that the situation could easily have resulted in fatalities.

“I have spoken to this couple, who I know personally, this morning and they have told me just how close the fire came to spreading to their house,” she said.

“We could so easily be dealing with fatalities this morning. Their car has been totally destroyed and damage caused to the front windows and frames of the house.

“Those who carried out this attack have absolutely no reason whatsoever for targeting a couple who have exemplary standing in Banbridge. I utterly condemn their reckless actions.

Police have appealed for information.
