Excrement contamination forces play area closure

A playpark has had to be closed due to excessive excrement contamination.

Ongoing vandalism, fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour has forced the closure of the play area in Coleraine.

Kylemore Play Park will be shut until a deep clean is carried out.

The decision was taken by Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council after a large amount of excrement was found at the site.

Council Officers located waste in 11 separate locations, including on an item of play equipment.

The park has been prone to this type of behaviour in the past.

The Mayor, Alderman Maura Hickey, said: “As a Council we work hard to provide safe play areas right across the Borough, so it’s very disappointing when our officers come across situations like this. Council resources, which could have been used elsewhere, will now have to be directed towards the clean-up operation. Our parks should be maintained as open and welcoming places, but behaviour like this is completely at odds with that. We all have a duty to look after the facilities in our communities.”

Anyone who notices suspicious behaviour in any play parks across the area are urged to contact police using the 101 number.
