A DUP alderman has defended his attack on ‘the politically correct Gestapo’ following the recent case taken against a bakery which refused to bake a cake featuring a slogan in support of gay marriage.

Councillor Alan Graham of North Down sent an email to all colleagues lambasting the Mayor, Alliance councillor Andrew Muir, following his support for the case and pointing out the council had voted against homosexual marriage.

“Homosexuals seem to seek offence, a bit like the anti-freedom, anti-parade lobby who go out of their way to be offended. I suppose it is all guns blazing with the politically correct Gestapo,” said Mr Graham.

Mr Muir said: “To make such a reference to the Gestapo is profoundly offensive when thousands of gay men, along with millions of Jews and others were killed by the Nazis during the Second World War.

“It is vital that elected representatives use respectful language at all times.”
