Londonderry arson attack could have ‘killed’

The District Commander of the Fire Service in Londonderry has said he has no doubt that someone could have been seriously injured or killed during an overnight arson attack in the city.

A number of cars caught fire during the incident around 5am today on Moat Street, which local residents have described as “terrifying.”

In an interview with the Derry Journal, District Commander Barry McDowell said 20 firefighters attended the blaze and crews had to help a number of residents from their homes.

When fire crews arrived at the scene four cars were on fire and three homes near the cars had been damaged.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police are treating the fire as malicious but a motive for the attack has not yet been established.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
