A pensioner was remanded into custody today (Saturday) accused of stealing handbags worth hundreds of pounds from women.

Standing in the dock of Belfast Magistrates Court, 70-year-old Rodney Archer was charged with three counts of robbery alleging he stole three bags from three separate women in April, August and December last year.

Archer, of the Upper Newtownards Road in east Belfast, confirmed he understood the charges against him which state the handbags were worth £750, £700 and £200.

A police officer said he believed he could connect Archer to the charges and as no bail application was made, District Judge George Conner remanded him in custody to appear again via video link on Tuesday.
