Man arrested after pensioner hammer attack

Police have arrested a 35-year-old man in relation to a hammer attack on a Co Down pensioner.

Officers said that three men armed with hammers entered a house in the Crossgar Road area of Ballynahinch at about 11.30pm on Thursday 8 May.

The residents were a man in his seventies and a woman aged in her 60s. The man “was injured after being struck by a hammer”.

The victim required hospital treatment but his injuries were not life threatening, police said.

The three men, who were wearing masks and gloves, left with some jewellery at about 1.30am.

Police later said they had arrested a 35-year-old male in connection with the aggravated burglary and also in relation to a Crown Court warrant.

He was later released on bail pending further enquiries in relation to the aggravated burglary, however he was remanded in custody in relation to the warrant.
