Man held by police investigating child grab

Police are currently holding a man in custody over what is described as a “suspicious approach” to a child.

They had received a report that a child in the Drumenny Road area of Coagh was playing outside their house at around 5.45pm on Wednesday, when a car drove into the driveway.

A man got out of the car and grabbed the child’s arm.

The child’s mother then came outside, and the male then got back into the car and drove off.

The male was described as in his late 50s, over 5’8” tall with short grey curly hair, and wearing a long red sleeved jumper and dirty jeans.

The man was driving a dark blue old-style car with five-spoke alloys, and the boot of the car had a red letter ‘S’ on it.

Today, police said a 55-year-old man was under arrest.

SDLP MLA Patsy McGlone, representing Mid-Ulster, said: “This is extremely concerning and worrying, and I urge parents everywhere to be on the alert.

“The last thing you want to do is scaremonger, but parents and the wider community need to be vigilant.
