A west Belfast man who tried to rob a Chinese restaurant armed with a knife has been jailed for two years.

Patrick McManus, 24, of Divismore Park, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery of the Emerald House on the Falls Road in west Belfast, possessing a knife with intent to commit an indictable offence and obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty.

Belfast Crown Court heard the offences were committed on September 27, 2016.

McManus had previously been convicted of an attempted robbery in 2011 while armed with a small knife for which he received a two-year sentence suspended for two years.

Judge Patricia Smyth today sentenced McManus to four years for attempted armed robbery, with half the sentence spent in custody and the remaining two years on supervised licence.
