Man jailed for riot had rioted before

A man who “draped” himself across a PSNI Land Rover during a riot was yesterday jailed for eight months.

Belfast Crown Court heard that as well as jumping on the bonnet of the vehicle, Paul Spence, 44, of Woodvale Street, motioned to rioters to attack the vehicle, as it was surrounded by a crowd at the Albertbridge Road and Templemore Avenue junction in east Belfast.

Spence was arrested as he walked away from the scene and made full admissions during police interview.

Solicitor advocate Johnathan Burke revealed Spence had received a suspended sentence for previous rioting on the Whiterock Road in 2006. He submitted that Spence had already paid an “immediate penalty” as he had been dismissed from his car parking attendant job.
