PUP slams attacks on Protestant homes

PUP representative Billy Mawhinney has condemned sustained attacks on Protestant homes by republicans at a Belfast interface between Workman Avenue and Springfield Road.

Mr Mawhinney said: “We have had five attacks on homes in less than a week. This is a despicable attempt to intimidate ordinary people who want to live in peace in their homes.

“One of the homes regularly attacked is lived in by two nuns, who have been part of the local community for years.

“These blatant and sectarian attacks must be stopped.”

He said the PSNI seemed “totally disinterested and cavalier” and seem “unable or unwilling to provide adequate protection to vulnerable residents”.

A PSNI spokesman said they are aware of incidents of anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in the Workman Avenue area over the past week.

Police take these incidents seriously and they are being actively investigated, he said.
