Two men have been arrested following what is believed to be a racially-motivated attack.

A 32-year-old and 25-year-old were held after the incident in the republican Sliabh Dubh area in west Belfast at about 8.30pm on Monday.

The 36-year-old man was assaulted, and police have appealed for any witnesses to come forward’

Sinn Fein MP Alex Maskey said he believes the man was attacked “simply because of the colour of his skin”.

“This attack needs condemned in the strongest possible terms. Our thoughts are with the victim of this cowardly and senseless attack,” he said in a statement.

“Only this Saturday we saw 8,000 people march through Belfast sending a very clear message that racism is wrong.

“As the MP for this area I am conveying the same message from this community. Racism and racists are not welcome in any part of Belfast.”

There has been growing concern in recent months about an upsurge in racially-motivated attacks, which have included faeces being thrown in a man’s face, a trio being attacked by a golf club-weilding gang, and more.
