A child and eight adults escaped injury after two pipe bombs exploded almost simultaneously outside homes in the Waterside area of Londonderry in what have been deemed racist attacks.

The attacks at around 1.35am on Saturday at a house in Lapwing Way and another in Lincoln Court are being treated as hate crimes, police said.

Damage was caused to the front door of the property at Lincoln Court.

Army Technical Officers were tasked to the scene and remains of the devices were taken away for further examination.

SDLP MLA Pat Ramsay said he understood the families living in the houses are Romanian, adding that the news the attacks were racially motivated was “a very disturbing development”.

“The devices used were viable and this disgraceful attack must be condemned by all in our community,” he said.

“My thoughts are with the families who have been targeted and endured such a terrifying experience during this unacceptable attack.”

“We must value, respect and accept our migrant community living in the City. Migrant workers are making a significant contribution to our economy and our society. Mr Ramsay added that those responsible for such crimes must be caught.

“I expect the fullest police investigation into this attack. Those responsible must face the full rigour of the law.

“I call on anyone who may have information about this to contact the PSNI”.

The attacks come just days after graffiti stating ‘Locals Only’ appeared on two empty housing Executive Properties in south Belfast. It has since been removed.
