Russian ‘threatened to kill city motorist’

A Russian man allegedly threatened to kill a motorist after stepping in front of her car in Belfast city centre, a court heard yesterday.

Vasilij Juferov is also accused of slapping another woman who got out of the vehicle.

The 34-year-old was detained by security guards in the nearby CastleCourt shopping complex.

Juferov faces charges of assault, threats to kill, attempted criminal damage to the car and assault on police over the incident on Saturday.

Belfast Magistrates’ Court heard claims that the car was halted by him in the Berry Street area.

Juferov, with an address at the Welcome Hostel in the city, is alleged to have attacked a female passenger who was being left off.

A verbal exchange then ensued between him and the driver, a judge was told.

The defendant did not know either alleged victim.

He denies the charges and claimed it could have been a miscommunication, his lawyer said.

Despite police opposition, District Judge Fiona Bagnall granted bail.

She imposed an alcohol ban on Juferov and ordered him to report to police daily to be breath-tested.
