SDLP MLA for Foyle, Mark H. Durkan, described the incident as “tragic”.

“It is with great sadness that I have learned of the death of a local man on the Clooney Road. The tragic accident happened just after midnight between the Maydown and Gransha roundabouts when the deceased was involved in a collision with another car,” said Mr. Durkan.

“My thoughts and the thoughts of all my SDLP colleagues in Derry, are with the friends and family of this man and indeed with the friends and families of those injured in this accident. I travel this stretch of road everyday and know just how dangerous this junction can be.

“I believe the occupants of the other car have suffered significant injuries which thankfully are non-life threatening. It is of course a traumatic experience for all involved and I sincerely hope they make a quick and thorough recovery,” he added.

PSNI Inspector Smyth said: “The road traffic collision involved a silver Ford Ka and a grey Peugeot 308. I would ask anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the cars in the area to contact Strand Road Police Station or the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference number 70 of 04/09/16.”

The Clooney Road has now re-opened to traffic.
