A 14 year-old boy has died after being hit by a van in Co Down.

The 30 year-old driver of the vehicle was arrested after the collision on the Scarva Road in Banbridge shortly before 8am on Thursday morning

The pedestrian was taken to hospital and later confirmed dead.

The Scarva Road has re-opened.

Joan Baird, UUP Councillor said: “I am genuinely sorry to hear about this tragedy today. And I want to extend my sympathy to the victim’s family at this terrible time.

“Today was an awful day to be driving.”

SDLP South Down MLA Seán Rogers added his sympathies.

“This is absolutely heartbreaking for the boy’s family, and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this incredibly sad time,” he said.

SDLP councillor Seamus Doyle said the community had been left in shock and extended his sympathies to the family.
