Woman knocked to ground as thief steals her handbag in Newry

A woman was knocked to the ground and had her handbag stolen in an incident in Newry on Saturday night.

The 51 year-old was walking along the Dublin Road at around 9.15pm when she was assaulted by a man who ran off with her handbag.

A few hours earlier in a similar incident in Banbridge a man approached a woman in Bridge Street to ask for money.

When she refused he attempted to grab her handbag. He made off empty handed after the incident at around 3.15pm.

The woman was not injured but police said she was left badly shaken.

The man is described as being aged in his late 20s or early 30s, around 5ft 4ins tall with long curly hair and dressed in dark clothing and a hat.

Police said they are not linking the incidents.
