Frampton and Firth claim another title

Carl Frampton and Bethany Firth are among those from the worlds of sport, business, science and the arts who have received honorary degrees from Queen's University.

Frampton is the first professional boxer from Northern Ireland to have held world titles in two weight classes – featherweight and super-bantamweight – while Firth is a four-time Paralympic gold-medallist swimmer. Both athletes have also received MBEs.

Sir Malcolm McKibbin, head of the Northern Ireland Civil Service (NICS) and permanent secretary of the Executive Office, also received an honorary doctorate for distinction in public service.

Other key figures to receive honorary degrees were Irish-Canadian playwright, literary historian, novelist, and screenwriter, Emma Donoghue, Professor Mary Daly, president of The Royal Irish Academy, John Agnew CBE, group chairman of Henderson Wholesale, and Stephen Luczo, chairman and chief executive of Seagate Technologies.

Queen’s awards honorary degrees to individuals who have achieved high distinction or given significant service in one or more fields of public or professional life, and who serve as ambassadors for the university and NI.
