A trade union boss has strongly defended a north Belfast teacher who has reportedly been the subject of sectarian intimidation.

The cross-border Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) spoke up for Catherine Seeley from the Boys’ Model School, who is also a Sinn Fein councillor.

Peter Bunting, ICTU assistant general secretary, said: “Legislation and the Belfast Agreement are both clear on the right to hold political opinions. “Politics works best when it takes place in public. People should not be ashamed to join political parties and make it public. This is a free speech issue at its most basic, and is the norm in modern democracies.”

The Belfast Education and Library Board said it had “actively engaged in meetings to resolve this matter expediently in the best interests of the staff member, pupils and wider school community”.
