Police have reported that the woman who died following a road traffic incident in Magherafelt yesterday afternoon was 81-year-old Rhoda Kearney from the Magherafelt area.
A police spokesman said that Ms Kearney died at the scene of the accident after being struck by a lorry on Broad Street.
Inspector Alan Hutton said: “Shortly after 12.10pm, it was reported a Volvo articulated lorry was involved in the incident.”
The Broad Street area of Magherafelt was closed in both directions for some time and motorists were advised to seek alternative main routes for their journey.
“Police would appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who was travelling on Broad Street around the time of the incident to contact the Collision Investigation Unit at Steeple police station or local police at Magherafelt on the non-emergency number 101,” he added.
SDLP Magherafelt councillor Christine McFlynn expressed her condolences to the family and friends of Ms Kearney following the news of her death.
“This is heartbreaking news that has saddened and stunned the local community,” the councillor said.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family and friends at this devastating time.
“My thoughts are also with the driver involved in this tragic incident.”
