The wife of Irish country music star Daniel O’Donnell has revealed she “feels great” days after having a double mastectomy.
Majella O Donnell, who posted a message on her husband’s official website, said: “I am now in hospital on day five after surgery for a double mastectomy with reconstruction.
“I feel great, thank God! It’s so good to be this far down the road and to know that all I have to do now is rest and heal.”
The procedure Majella opted to undergo to prevent the return of cancer is similar to the one Hollywood star Angelina Jolie underwent last year.
Majella was diagnosed with cancer last July.
“Well, it’s been a very difficult seven months between being diagnosed with cancer and my wonderful dad passing away very suddenly,” she writes.
“As Daniel has already told you, I had a lumpectomy in July and started chemotherapy in September.”
In a message to wellwishers and Daniel’s fans, she adds: “What I want to tell you all at this stage is how very grateful I am to every one of you for everything you have done for me over the last few months.
“Please do not think that, because you haven’t heard from me, your kindness has gone unnoticed.
“All your prayers, good wishes, donations, gifts, mass cards and sacred relics have been of great comfort to me.
“I consider myself very lucky to have so many people batting for me!
“I can honestly say that I’m out the ‘other side’ and in good health again.
“Please forgive me for not answering you all personally but it would have been impossible. There have been thousands of communications and every one was so sincerely appreciated and welcomed.
“I don’t want to go on about it too much but please know that I will never forget your kindness. God bless to all.”
Last September, Majella had her hair shaved off for the Irish Cancer Society live on RTE’s Late Late Show.
The brave act was reported to have raised almost 500,000 euro.
Prior to the major operation, Majella and Daniel are reported to have spent time in the couple’s holiday home in Tenerife.
Majella, from Thurles in Co Tipperary, married the Donegal man in 2002.
She is also a singer and released her own album in 2011.
The marvellous thing about Majella O’Donnell is that she is so positive and is looking to the future, according to Cancer Focus chief Deirdre Conlon.
“She is upbeat and taking it day by day, which is really what you have to do to get through it,” said Ms Conlon. “She also has a great care network, which is needed.
“The time she shaved her head was brave because that is one of the worst things people have to face, their hair falling out.”
The charity spokeswoman added: “Every two minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer and more than one in three of us will develop cancer in some form in our lifetime.”
