The voices of emergency care nurses will always be heard, the health minister has said at a meeting with nurses’ representatives in Belfast.

Addressing the Royal College Of Nursing yesterday, Edwin Poots praised those on the front line for their “unending commitment” in often “difficult and challenging” situations.

The summit followed mounting pressure on the minister over revelations that lengthy waiting times and staff shortages had contributed to five deaths in one A&E unit last year.

“Nurses hold a unique role as you remain with the patient on their journey through healthcare,” Mr Poots said.
