Horror at Ulster Unionist support for abortion

It is most disappointing to learn from your paper (April 25) that a number of Ulster Unionist Party candidates in the Assembly election support the extension of the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland.

Over the last 49 years this act has allowed a system of legalised infanticide to operate in Great Britain; under its provisions millions of unborn children have been destroyed.

That any candidate should express support for this system of slaughter fills me with horror.

Last year Mr McCune received the endorsement of the Rev Martin Smyth during the general election. During his time as UUP MP for South Belfast Mr Smyth was known for his opposition to abortion.

It would be of interest to know what he thinks of his protégé’s support for a cause he opposed with such vigour.

The UUP still has a number of senior members who oppose abortion, most notably Tom Elliott and Danny Kennedy.

However, although I am a former member of the party and have voted for it in many elections, I am not prepared to vote this time for Rodney McCune.

Lest I be accused of support for the DUP or any other party I should make it clear that I will not vote at all this time.
