Pictures reported to show former Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt lying face down on a Belfast hotel floor while a woman holds him by the collar have been printed in a daily newspaper.
The incident is said to have taken place last month.
The high profile politician had been on a night out with friends when he became involved in a dispute.
According to the report in The Sun on Monday, Mr Nesbitt was with three friends when he was approached as he entered the hotel and asked about his work as a politician.
As well as the woman seen holding him by the collar, another woman appears to be sitting on his legs.
The newspaper reports that he told a reporter that “things happen” but Mr Nesbitt declined to elaborate on what was happening when the picture was taken.
“I don’t want to say any more,” he said.
“When you have a profile and you go out in public, you can’t expect people to fully respect your privacy,” the report added.
The News Letter has asked the UUP for a comment but the party has not responded as yet.
The former journalist is the Ulster Unionist’s candidate for Strangford in next month’s general election.
