Widower John McAreavey has asked for “peace and respect” following reports he has begun a new relationship three years after his wife was murdered on their honeymoon.

Michaela, daughter of Tyrone GAA manager Mickey Harte, was killed in January 2011 as the couple enjoyed a break in Mauritius.

To date no-one has been convicted in connection with the 27 year-old bride’s murder, which shocked the world.

Following reports that John, from Tullylish outside Banbridge in Co Down, has become involved in a relationship with Kildare accountant Tara Brennan, he called for privacy.

In a tweet on Saturday he said: “3 years on and vile Irish Mirror reporters still landing at my front door... Any chance of some peace and respect?”

A spokesman for the family is reported as saying the relationship with Tara is an “embryonic friendship that has grown”, adding “friends and family are happy for him”.
