Liam Neeson has been presented with the first ever Belfast Ambassador Commendation by the new Lord Mayor of Belfast Mairtin O Muilleoir during a visit to New York City.
An initiative of the new Lord Mayor, the Belfast Ambassador Award will be presented to ex-pats and locals who are outstanding advocates for the people and city of Belfast.
“No-one has been a greater ambassador for the arts and culture of Belfast, highlighting its burgeoning theatre scene and its new film-making fame,” said the Belfast councillor. “Liam Neeson has also been a tireless ally of the peace process and a standard-bearer for the transformation Belfast has undergone.”
Other meetings during stateside visit included those with Mayor Bloomberg, Kathryn Wylde, CEO of Partnership for NYC, Mayor Cory Booker of Newark and various Irish American business leaders.
Plans discussed with the New York Mayor included an inward investment mission from America to Belfast due to take place next Spring.
The Lord Mayor also visited homeowners affected by Hurricane Sandy and expressed solidarity with all of New York as the recovery work continues.
Councillor Ó Muilleoir will be back in Belfast on Saturday to attend a number of events in his home city.
