150 screened after E. coli outbreak

THE source of an E. coli outbreak at a nursery school near Lurgan was still unclear last night as investigations into the incident continued.

On Sunday, the Public Health Agency (PHA) confirmed that 12 children from the Holly House nursery in Dollingstown had contracted the O157 strain of the bug.

A total of 150 children and staff at the nursery have now been screened for the illness.

None of the children are seriously ill. However, the nursery will remain closed until the infection source is identified.

An industrial cleaning operation is under way at the premises and it is understood tests on food have been clear.

The nursery said their primary concern was for the children, their families and the staff.

Dr Neil Irvine, consultant in health protection at the PHA, said: "We responded as soon as it was reported to us so I just want to reassure people that measures are in place, and they've been ongoing since it was reported."
