£500k to probe blindness

QUEEN'S Centre for Vision Science (CVS] is to receive more than £500,000 to investigate blindness in the UK.

CVS researchers will receive three grants to carry out studies over the next three years. They will investigate how blindness affects diabetics and people over 50.

New York-based Juvenile Diabetics Research Foundation has given the team more than 250,000 to study diabetic retinopathy – a disease most type 1 diabetics will develop at some point.

Around two million people in the UK – who are over 50 years of age – are affected by sight loss.

Laser therapy can help if detected early enough but at a setback of around 237,000. Fight for Sight is the UK’s leading charity dedicated to funding research for blindness.
