400TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS START WITH JOURNEY BACK IN TIME
THE City Council has begun Lisburn's 400th anniversary with an evening celebrating an historical journey through four centuries.
This event is the first of many planned throughout the year to celebrate the City's 400th anniversary.
Council Members, Freeman of the City, representatives from ethnic communities and pupils from local schools and colleges attended the evening which celebrated by journeying through the four centuries with presentations by local historian, Dr Bryan Turner, Museum Curator Mr Brian Mackey, Museum Researcher Mrs Brenda Collins, Chief Executive of the Chinese Welfare Association, Mrs Eileen Chan Hu, and Mr Daniel Konieczny of the Polish Association Northern Ireland.
The Mayor, Councillor Ronnie Crawford said: "The evening celebrated a diversity of culture, and took us on a journey from the founding of Lisnagarvey through to what we recognise as Lisburn City today. I learned a lot from the presentations and I'm sure everyone was able to appreciate the hard work and tenacity of our forefathers."
Councillor William Ward, Chairman of the Strategic Policy Committee said, "Our 400th anniversary is unique. This event gave an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of culture that has contributed to making the city what it is today" he said.
"The Council looks forward to launching the events that have been scheduled in the coming weeks, and I would encourage everyone to take part in the planned activities throughout the year."
