A-hunting we will go . . .

A LARGE crowd of spectators gathered yesterday to watch the North Down Foxhounds start off the New Year in traditional style with a drag hunt across the winter countryside.

The day began with a hunt breakfast at the Crawfordsburn Inn before the 45 hounds, or 22-and-a-half couples in hunting terminology, along with their accompanying riders, set off on the marked route towards the Craigantlet Hills.

Hunt spokesman Terence McKeag said: "It was an excellent day with the biggest crowd I've seen for a long time.

"We covered a lot of country and there was a lot of jumping, so it was a great day."

The drag hunt involved laying a scent across the countryside for the hounds to follow, but with no actual foxes being hunted.
