Anger at GAA fans' 'loutish' behaviour
CASTLEDERG UUP councillor Derek Hussey has branded some behaviour in the town as loutish intimidation following Tyrone's Gaelic football win on Sunday.
Mr Hussey said: "Immediately following final whistle several hundred people poured on to the streets of Castlederg to celebrate the Tyrone victory. However, this natural outburst of joy, was marred by actions of some so-called supporters.
"An impromptu possibly illegal parade was undertaken up and down the town's main street by celebrating fans. During this time others in the area were verbally and physically assaulted by some in the parading crowd.
"Several incidents of loutish and intimidatory behaviour were reported to me."
Many incidents happened in view of police officers, but he was disappointed by lack of police response and will raise it with the DPP, he said.
Mr Hussey said two women returning from a Christening party had their car thumped causing distress to children passengers.
"When they pleaded with those involved to stop several others attempted to drag them from their vehicle by the hair," he said.
He said occupants of another car were treated similarly, but thankfully genuine Tyrone fans intervened.
He has urged anyone affected to contact police and have their complaints recorded for investigation," he said.
And DUP Mid-Ulster MLA Ian McCrea yesterday claimed Tyrone fans screamed sectarian abuse at a Royal British Legion church parade.
"The actions of those responsible were foul and disgusting. It demonstrated that there are those within our society who seek to deepen sectarian strife by stirring up division and hatred," he said.
