Arms cache found close to border

Irish police have seized a stash of weapons, ammunition and pipebombs in Co Donegal.

Four pistols, two revolvers, two sawn off shotguns and the ammunition were recovered during a planned search in the Carrigans area.

Two suspect devices, understood to be pipebombs, were also found and made safe by Irish army bomb disposal experts.

Gardai said the cache was found as a result of an investigation into an armed raid on 27 February in Carrigans.

Three men, thought to have been armed with a firearm, robbed the post office of an undisclosed sum of money. They made off in a getaway van and there were no physical injuries.

No arrests have been made and Gardai were unable to say if there was any paramilitary connection. "Investigations are ongoing" said a Gardai spokesman.
