Assembly to debate victims' report

ELECTED representatives at Stormont are to debate a controversial report dealing with the legacy of the Troubles on Monday.

A motion, co-signed by DUP MLAs Lord Morrow and David Simpson, condemns the proposal in the Eames-Bradley document which refers to a recognition payment to victims.

Officially launched last Wednesday, the report by the Consultative Group on the Past provoked anger amongst victims' campaigners and relatives of those who lost loved ones.

The recommendation proposes a 12,000 payment to families of all those killed during the Troubles, including the perpetrators of violence.

The DUP motion tabled at Stormont reads: "That this Assembly recognises the importance of meeting the needs of victims; and condemns proposals from the Consultative Group on the Past which equate perpetrators of violence with innocent victims."

The group, co-chaired by Lord Eames and Denis Bradley, has come up with a total of 30 recommendations including a legacy commission and a reconciliation forum.
