Award for peace campaigner
PEACE and reconciliation campaigner Alan McBride, who lost his wife and father-in-law in the IRA Shankill bombing in 1993, has been presented with an award honouring his work at a special ceremony in Belfast.
Mr McBride, who is now co-ordinator of the WAVE Trauma Centre in north Belfast, which works with victims of the Troubles, was presented with the Roll of Honour at the 13th annual Aisling Awards gala in the Europa Hotel.
He was presented with the award by Belfast Lord Mayor Naomi Long.
Guest of Honour at the awards was the Speaker and President of New York City Council, Christine Quinn.
She was last in Belfast for the Investment conference of May 2008 and on this visit has carried out a series of engagements with community and political leaders across Belfast.
Ms Quinn also met Irish premier Brian Cowen on Wednesday morning.
She presented former Belfast Lord Mayor Tom Hartley with the coveted Person of the Year Award.
Among those also shortlisted for honours at the event were the West Belfast and Greater Shankill Enterprise Council, the Oh Yeah Music Centre, the University of Ulster School of Art and Design, The Merchant Hotel, the Between the Bridges Fun Run and the Park Avenue Hotel.
