Award for two young legal eagles
TWO of Belfast's budding young lawyers have beaten global competition to triumph at one of the legal world's most prestigious awards.
Niall Hargan and Conor Houston, who are training to be solicitors at the Institute of Professional Legal Studies at Queen's University, claimed first prize at the world final of the Louis M Brown International Client Counselling Competition at the National Law School of India University in Bangalore yesterday.
Describing their victory as a "huge honour", Mr Houston said: "It was a unique and wonderful experience to be able to compete against young lawyers from around the world and share with them our ideas and approaches to lawyer-client relations.
"The competition was a real test of the skills that are needed to succeed in the legal profession," he said.
Mr Hargan added: "Conor and I had to complete a series of mock lawyer-client interviews, during which we had to listen carefully to our clients, empathise with them, try to better understand their needs and suggest the best possible solutions to their legal problem."
It is the second time students from the institute have won the world title, the last time in 2001, and on two other occasions they have been runners-up.
The pair were pitted against teams from 18 countries.
