Bid to limit shopping on Remembrance Sunday
NORTH Belfast MP Nigel Dodds is one of the co-sponsors of a Bill in the House of Commons calling for the restricted opening of shops on Remembrance Sunday – similar to the restrictions on Christmas Day and Easter Sunday.
The Bill was presented this week by senior Conservative backbencher Sir Patrick Cormack, and Mr Dodds is a co-sponsor, along with Vincent Cable of the Lib Dems, Kate Hoey and Rosie Cooper of the Labour Party, as well as representatives of the other smaller parties in Westminster.
The DUP deputy leader said: "This Bill – called The Remembrance Sunday Closure of Shops Bill – has been introduced with cross-party support.
"It is all the more important given the tragic circumstances where so many servicemen and woman are making the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.
"I believe that people want to acknowledge the sacrifice of our troops by setting aside Remembrance Sunday so that ceremonies can be conducted with proper and due decorum. It wouldn't affect certain smaller businesses, so that pharmacies, petrol filling stations and shops at airports or railway stations could operate as normal."
The plan is for the proposal to become law early in the next Parliament.
