Body consulting on Troubles legacy invites views
THE new body assessing ways of dealing with the painful legacy of the Troubles is seeking input from the public – and especially victims.
Lord Robin Eames and Denis Bradley, who co-chair the Consultative Group on the Past, have issued an open letter encouraging all those affected by the events of the past 40 years to share their views with them.
The group has also placed notices in Belfast, London and Dublin newspapers – including today's News Letter – as part of its ongoing public engagement exercise.
Since it was established in June the CGP has been talking to individuals, organisations, statutory bodies and governments. Now the public has until December 7 to offer written submissions.
In the open letter, which appears on today's Letters Page, Lord Eames and Mr Bradley wrote: "Our aim is to hear the widest possible range of views, including the views of people who consider that they are victims of the past.
"We will also give careful consideration to requests from people who wish to meet us. We are very aware that there will be many people living or working in the Republic of Ireland, in England and elsewhere that will also have been affected by the past.
"To those people we would say that your views are equally important to us and we would be pleased to hear from you.
"While the timeframe of the past 40 years was used when our work was commissioned, this should not be seen as a barrier to anyone who feels that they can make a positive contribution."
