Bomb alert an 'elaborate hoax'

A BOMB alert in Armagh has been deemed a hoax following a security operation.

The Mall area of the city was cordoned off for much of Monday morning after suspicious object was found during the early hours.

The security alert cause much disruption in the area forcing a local school to close.

The vicinity has since reopened to traffic.

Condemning the perpetrators as "deeply irresponsible", DUP William Irwin said: "This is becoming a real problem in around Armagh City and there seems to be a lull for a while and then the problem raises its ugly head again.

"We had the motor find only last week on Friary Road and now we have yet more disruption with this hoax device.

"Despite the fact this was a hoax, given it has been placed close to the Cenotaph and in an area where a lot of people would walk and also close to a school entrance, really illustrates just how obnoxious these criminals are," he added.
