Bomb attack on officer's family

A PIPE bomb attack on the family of a Newry police officer has "added a new dimension" to terrorist intimidation, it has been claimed.

The front window of a house in the city was blown in and minor damage caused to a wall on Monday night at 10.35pm. There were no injuries.

The householder heard a noise at his front door and was on his way to investigate when the device exploded. The device has been removed for further examination and police inquiries are continuing.

Ulster Unionist MLA Danny Kennedy said: "I am very concerned for the safety of all police officers after this indirect attack on a police family," he said.

"It adds a new dimension to such attacks and is clearly designed to intimidate nationalist people from involvement in the PSNI.

"It is important that individual officers and their families are given every protection possible," he said.

SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley said that the people of Newry had no desire to be dragged back into violence.

"Attacks on the police and their families will not be tolerated by the people of Newry," he said. "My message to those responsible is that they should lay off and go away."

Meanwhile, it is understood that PSNI officers in Londonderry have been advised to stop socialising in the cityside because of a heightened threat from dissident republicans.

It is believed officers have been advised not to continue to use clubs, bars or restaurants on the west bank of the Foyle.
