Bookmaker in talks to avert strike

A LEADING bookmakers in Northern Ireland is involved in talks on Friday to prevent a walk-out by staff.

Staff at William Hill are threatening to take industrial action over grievances regarding unsocialable working hours and other issues.

The betting firm has 37 premises across Northern Ireland.

The GMB Union has warned the action will take place over the weekend unless their demands are met.

This weekend, Ulster punters are expected to place bets on a high profile meeting at popular horse recing venue, Ascot.

In a statement, William Hill said: "We are committed to finding a resolution to prevent disruptive action.

"We believe our offer, which is above inflation, is fair and reasonable in the current climate," it added.
