Boys found playing with drugs on the street

TWO Co Londonderry mothers have spoken of their "shock and anger" after finding their two young sons playing with drugs in the street outside their homes.

Six-year-old Reece Dysart and his seven-year-old pal Charlie Campbell were playing on a green outside their homes in the Heights area of Coleraine when they came across five bags of white powder.

Thinking nothing of it, the young boys began to play with the powder, throwing it at each other and pouring it in their football boots during the incident last week.

Charlie's mum Nicola told the News Letter: "My partner walked to the shop and when he came back he found the boys absolutely covered in the stuff.

"They said it was magic powder they were rubbing on their football boots to make them run faster. They're only little boys, they had no idea how dangerous it could be."

Neither of the boys ingested powder from the bags, which Reece's mum Lucy was told contained amphetamines by police on Tuesday.

She said: "Reece had opened one of the bags with his teeth and it was all over his t-shirt – I can't believe he didn't get it in his mouth. I have a one-year-old so if he had brought it into the house, my baby could easily have eaten it. Goodness knows what could have happened.

"We're really relieved the boys are okay but I'm angry too. There are so many children in the area and they all play on the green.

"I'm just shocked, I really can't believe that someone wouldn't realise how dangerous it is to leave drugs around children."

Lucy said that she would like to see a greater police presence in the area to make sure this type of incident is never repeated.

A police spokesman told the News Letter yesterday that initial tests indicated the bags held an illegal Class A drug.

He added: "The sheer recklessness of leaving or concealing drugs in a place where children could find them is not to be under-estimated.

"We would ask all responsible people in the community to help us tackle drugs issues."
