C-Diff bug claims more lives

THE death of eight more patients in Northern Trust hospitals are being linked to the hospital bug, C Difficile.

Over 60 people have now died since the start of the year.

Figures for July show the amount of identifications of the infection actually fell by four to 19 cases.

Northern Trust spokesman, Dr Peter Flanagan expressed sadness at the eight deaths.

The trust said of the deaths in July, seven were caused by an underlying medical condition and not specifically by the bug.

Dr Flanagan confirmed infection rates were falling, but instances of relapsed cases were increasing on hospital wards.

"We are continuing to manage the outbreak declared in January this year and there are clear signs that the range of infection control procedures we have introduced show that we have controlled the spread of infection in Trust hospitals," Dr Flanagan said.

Health minister Michael McGimpsey commissioned an independent review of the outbreak in the Northern Trust area.
