Calls for safe driving after 101st person is killed
DUP MP Sammy Wilson has extended his sympathy to the family of the man killed in a road crash and called for people to drive "with common sense".
The man, killed at 2am on the Shore Road in Jordanstown, was the 101st to be killed this year on Ulster's roads.
This time last year 90 people had been killed.
Two others in the vehicle, which collided with an articulated Tesco lorry, were taken to hospital.
Last night, a spokeswoman for the Belfast Trust said one was in a stable condition and the other in a serious condition in hospital.
Mr Wilson, East Antrim MP, said: "I am concerned about the numbers killed on the roads this year.
"Last year, when I was DOE minister, we put a lot of time and effort into improving road safety, and that year had the lowest number of road deaths for some time.
"There are many factors which contribute to this, including Government intervention encouraging people to drive sensibly.
"People need to realise a car is a dangerous weapon if wrongly used, and drivers need to use common sense."
SDLP councillor Noreen McClelland has expressed her sadness at the death.
The Newtownabbey councillor said: "My deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this tragic accident.
"My thoughts are also with the other passengers of the car and I wish them all full and speedy recoveries.
"All road users must take extra care while travelling in these wintry conditions. Drivers need to slow down and give extra time for travelling, especially with the unknown risk of black ice."
