City blaze 'treated as arson'

A FIRE which destroyed a north Belfast flat is being treated as arson, police have confirmed.

Three people were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation after the blaze broke out at a first-floor property in the Ballysillan Road area on Wednesday night.

Police have arrested three people in connection with the incident.

A spokesman said: "Detectives are treating the fire as arson at this stage. Three people, one male and two females, have been arrested and are currently helping police with their inquiries."

The property - situated above a post office - was destroyed in the fire.

Speaking to the BBC, Alan Walmsley from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service praised the actions of the emergency services.

Speaking specifically about the rescue operation, he said: "The crews very quickly got a ladder to the window, were able to smash the glass and carried down both persons to safety."
