Debate heats up as Robinson row rumbles on
Iris Robinson's claims that homosexuality is an "abomination" and that gay people can be converted to heterosexuality provoked heated comments on the News Letter website.
Peter File, from Londonderry, said: “I for one am sick of the homosexual agenda being thrust down our throats. Hope-fully she can beat off her critics and carry on her work.”
J Rodgers, from Ballyclare, said the issue was “not a matter of opinion” and that change of sexuality had been shown in scientific studies and in those who have undergone religious conversion.
“The media who are pushing the homosexual agenda, and vilifying Christians, are suppressing the truth,” he said.
Mrs Robinson’s critics who affirm that homosexuality is good are contradicting themselves because right and wrong “cannot exist if there is no God”, he added.
Science does not show that people are born gay, said Phelim McIntyre from England. “Who says so? Peter Tatchell of Outrage, the head of the Human Genome Project, and Dene Hammer – the man who did the gay gene research,” he said.
“Also, science shows that people can change and change therapy is not damaging to those who pursue it. The position of the Royal College of Psychiatrists is unscientific propaganda.”
Another poster, One For All, said of Mrs Robinson “it’s about time someone stood up to the tiny but vociferous ‘gay rights’ lobby”.
Councillor David Barbour, from Coleraine, said he would be interested in how those who see nothing wrong with the ‘gay’ lifestyle view the Bible, which shows it and other practices as “an unwanted way of life”.
Gareth from Belfast described Mrs Robinson’s comments as “ridiculous” adding “we need to have sensible leadership to take this country forward. This certainly isn’t it”.
Ciaran from Belfast said Mrs Robinson’s comments weren’t surprising: “She really is a bad spokesperson for this country, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from a fundamentalist Christian,” he said.
Steve, from Downpatrick, said: “How on earth can we expect sensible government from someone who believes that homosexuality can be ‘cured’. Will Iris be sending for the exorcists next?”
“Glensman” said all the scientific evidence available proved “without a shadow of a doubt” that counselling simply cannot change homosexuals.
“What is more, as an MP, I feel Iris should be utterly ashamed of herself for making homophobic statements,” he said.
Christianity teaches us to love our neighbours but he would prefer a homosexual neighbour than a “fundamentalist Christian”, who frightens him, he added.
“Fastlad” said in Greek mythology Mrs Robinson was the goddess of the rainbow. “True Ulster dwellers will appreciate the irony”, he said.
Napalm, from Ballysillan, added: “We need to take narrow-minded religious views out of local politics.
“Our politicians are here to serve all the people, not the churches. If this happened on the mainland there would have been a national uproar.”
